DVR vs NVR: which recorder do you need?

A DVR records from analog cameras over coaxial cable. The camera sends a raw video signal and the recorder does the encoding. It is a cost-effective route and works well for small to medium installations.

An NVR records from IP cameras over network cable. The camera encodes the video itself and sends it as data. With PoE, the same cable also powers the camera, which simplifies installation considerably.

An XVR is a hybrid: it accepts analog cameras and a limited number of IP channels. This is the practical choice when you are expanding an existing analog system rather than replacing it.

If you are building new and want higher resolution with cleaner cabling, an NVR with PoE cameras is normally the better long-term investment.
