How to choose the right CCTV camera

Start with the area you need to cover, not with the camera. Measure the distance from the mounting point to the furthest thing you want to identify. A 2.8mm lens gives a wide view at short range; a longer or motorised lens is needed once the distance grows.
Resolution decides how much detail survives when footage is zoomed. 2MP is usually enough for general movement in a small shop or home. 4MP and 5MP are the sensible choice when you need to read a face or a number plate.
Check the lighting at night. If the area has no light at all, look at the IR range specification and add a margin — an advertised 30 metre IR range is measured under ideal conditions.
Finally, match the camera to the recorder. An analog camera needs a DVR or XVR; an IP camera needs an NVR, ideally with PoE so one cable carries both data and power.
